Transit

There are two options for transportation. One is public transit, and the other is owning an automobile. Leasing an automobile will likely be too expensive for you unless ou intend on living in your automobile. There are advantages, and disadvantages to both options, so I will go into detail below.

First is public transit. If you don’t have public transit, this is not an option, and you need to buy your automobile. If you have public transit, and this is your only solution, then you would have to make it work. You would have schedules that are hopefully followed, and a fare that is hopefully stable. Public Transit is especially invaluable if the places you go have expensive parking options. If you really can’t afford to park your automobile, then you should be taking the bus. Obviously, it is not likely it will be door to door service. One of my doctors, I have to walk 10 minutes from the bus stop to the building. Now, I walk slower due to pain, but it is still a distance. I don’t have a choice. I am getting off at the closest stop that I can. However, an automobile is expensive. You have insurance, registration fees, inspection fees, cost of gas which is likely to not go down, and maintenance. With public transit, you simply do not have all of that.

And unless you are using a pedal bicycle, your automobile will be there for you. You would be able to drive to the grocery store, and buy multiple bags of groceries that is a logistical nightmare when relying on the bus. If your doctor’s office has parking, then there is a place to put your automobile while you are in the office. However, you have to deal with insurance, registration, inspections, repairs, maintenance, and fuel – all of these can end up being unpredictable in price.

What I Do

I use public transit most of the time. I also have a transit card which allows me to have a 3 hour pass every time I pay for my ride. In my instance, I budget $1.40/ride. More about this option will be on the bus page of this section. For groceries, or when I need a car, I call my local friend, and ask her to take me. I give her as much of a notice as possible so she can make decisions on her schedules based on my needs. I do pay her for the efforts that she has to put towards my needs. I understand that she has all of the expenses that I mentioned.
